Total and Net Ionic Equations

Total Ionic Equation: When you write the dissociated form of the ionic compounds dissolved  in water you have the total ionic equations.

Net Ionic Equation: During a double displacement reaction if one of the products formed is a compound with low solubility, which can be determined from the solubility rules; we say we have a precipitate. Writing the formation of the precipitate or the solid product formed from its constituent ions is called net ionic equations.
Spectator Ions: The ions present in solution after a double displacement reaction, they do not precipitate. Hence they are called spectator ions. We strike through the spectator ions in the total ionic equation.

As a prelude start writing the dissociation products of the following ionic compounds and identify the compounds with low solubility.

Sodium Phosphate

Barium Nitrate

Potassium Sulfate

Sodium Chromate

Strontium Sulfate

Sulfuric Acid

Lead Iodide

Ammonium Sulfate

Ammonium Nitrate

Silver Chloride

Silver Nitrate

Calcium Chloride

Total Ionic Equation

Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2KI(aq) $latex \rightarrow$ PbI2(s) + 2KNO3(aq)

Pb2+ (aq) + 2NO3 (aq) + 2K+ (aq) + 2I(aq) $latex \rightarrow$ PbI2(s) + 2K+ (aq) + 2NO3 (aq)

Net ionic equation is written for the solid precipitate formed

Net Ionic Equations:

Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2KI(aq) $latex \rightarrow$ PbI2(s) + 2KNO3(aq)

Pb2+ (aq) + 2NO3(aq) + 2K1+(aq) + 2I(aq) $latex \rightarrow$ PbI2(s) + 2K1+(aq) + 2NO3(aq)

Pb2+ (aq) + 2I(aq) $latex \rightarrow$ PbI2(s)

Total and Net Ionic Equation

Predict the solubility of the compounds formed in aqueous solution and write the total ionic equations and the net ionic equations for the following reaction

Identify the spectator ions in the following double displacement reactions – Use solubility rules if needed.

Barium Chloride + Potassium Sulfate $latex \rightarrow$ Barium Sulfate + Potassium Chloride

Calcium Chloride + Sodium Sulfate $latex \rightarrow$ Calcium Sulfate + Sodium Chloride

Barium Nitrate + Sodium Chromate $latex \rightarrow$ Barium Chromate + Sodium Nitrate

Lead(II) Nitrate + Potassium Chloride $latex \rightarrow$

Lead(II) Acetate + Hydrochloric acid $latex \rightarrow$

Zinc + Copper(II) sulfate $latex \rightarrow$
